Southern Moonlight Self-Guided MotorcycleTour (14 days)

There isn’t much of New Zealand’s South Island you won’t get the chance to see on our stunning 2-week tour. With probably the most varied and scenic landscapes packed into the smallest area anywhere in the world and the kind of roads (and lack of traffic!) you dream of, this is two weeks of motorcycle heaven. Where else can you see stunning alpine vistas, empty surf beaches, rainforest, and glaciers that almost meet the sea and all within an hour’s traffic free riding from very comfortable accommodation? .

Brilliant holiday, great roads, mind blowing scenery, excellent hospitality, food to die for and nil traffic – why are there so few bikes in New Zealand? We must have seen no more than 6-7 all week! One great day we followed the lake shores – Wanaka/Hawea and over the Haast pass – for 2 hours in brilliant sunshine winding between snow covered peaks and only passed 2 cars. Priceless! We had a great riding holiday and will definitely go back again.

Itinerary

DAY 1 Arrive Christchurch. We meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. After you’ve checked in, depending on how you feel, there’s time to relax in Hagley Park,Christchurch’s ‘village green’ or stretch your legs with a stroll around Christchurch. Visit the famous Botanical Gardens or the Antarctic Museum. If you arrive in New Zealand a day early and you feel up to it, you can take a trip out to Akaroa or Motukarara on the beautiful Banks Peninsula or a boat trip on around the harbour.

DAY 2 Christchurch – Mt Cook (350 km). After breakfast, collect your bike and set off on your first day in the saddle, a leisurely ride to Mount Cook, in the centre of the South Island. Visit the Mount John observatory at Lake Tekapo and finish the day with a spectacular ride along the banks of glacial Lake Pukaki and the Tasman River with Mount Cook looming ahead.

DAY 3 Mt Cook – Dunedin (340 km). After the short ride to Twizel, head through Mackenzie Country and Victorian gold rush towns of Cromwell and Alexandra, reputed to be the hottest and coldest town in New Zealand, both are worth a look around. Then stop at the historic gold-mining town of St Bathan’s for a drink at the famous Vulcan Hotel. Follow the gold trail to the Pacific Coast, and if time allows take a detour to the famous Moeraki boulders, before heading south to your overnight stop on the scenic Otago Peninsula.

DAY 4 Dunedin - Te Anau (290 km). Say goodbye to the pounding surf of the deep blue South Pacific Ocean and head inland across rolling green farmland covered in white woolly sheep. The land becomes more mountainous as the day progresses and you reach Fiordland, with its many mirror-like lakes and snow-capped mountains. You will see why they call this one of the most scenic places on earth! Your destination is scenic Te Anau. A Farmstay is a great option where you will get a tour of the farm, shown what they do, eat locally grown produce and receive the warmest of Kiwi welcomes. Optional Farmstay available.

NZ-M9-10DAY 5 Te Anau - Milford Sound – Te Anau (240 km). An enjoyable morning’s ride takes you to the spectacular Milford Sound, where you take a bewitching cruise down the world-famous fiord to the open sea and back. On the return ride, there’s plenty of time to stop and enjoy the stunning scenery and the twisty road is every bit a match for the cruise..

DAY 6 Te Anau - Queenstown (195 km). Today you can take the long way or the short way – you choose. If you want to get to Queenstown early and start doing some of the many activities there, then it's only a 2-hour ride. Before you get there, enjoy the leisurely ride, maybe take in a wildlife reserve or a scenic flight but if you want a full day riding then head south to Invercargill and visit the Burt Munro Memorial and the National Motorcycle Museum or head to the end of the road at Bluff. For lunch, why not sample the world’s best oysters from Foveaux Strait before returning north to Queenstown, the adventure playground of New Zealand.

DAY 7 Queenstown (free day). An opportunity to sample some of the many activities in the local area, jet boating on the Shotover River, tandem skydiving, fly fishing, a vintage steam cruise and of course bungee jumping, and too many more to mention! Then it’s time to relax in the Gondola restaurant or the Motor Museum, or go for a ride to Arthur’s Point lookout and Coronet Peak.

DAY 8 Queenstown - Fox Glacier (335 km). Heading north from Queenstown you pass Lakes Hawea and Wanaka before reaching the subtropical rainforests of Haast Pass and the west coast. Following the coastal highway north through coastal rainforests you arrive at the spectacular Fox Glacier in the heart of Westland National Park. There may be time to walk on the glaciers, take a helicopter ride or a helihike.NZGT4

DAY 9 Fox Glacier - Hanmer Springs (320 km). Today is a big day’s riding but with time for some stops along the way; the sheepskin factory in Ross, a greenstone factory at Hokitika and the reconstructed gold-mining shanty town near Greymouth. And after all that there’s some serious riding to be done as you head inland via Reefton and over the superb Lewis Pass to the beautiful location of Hanmer Springs.

Day 10 Hanmer Springs – Nelson (300-395km). A choice of routes is available on most days and today is no exception. Your Tourbook will offer suggestions and indications as to what you can see and where. Take in the Buller Gorge, the Lewis Pass, Lake Brunner, some Marlborough vineyards and some wonderful rural valleys before reaching the ‘sunniest town in South Island’.

Day 11 Nelson (free day). Today it’s a free day to ride and explore Nelson and surrounding areas. Nelson has some of the finest beaches in New Zealand and more sunshine than any other part of the country. For those who like to continue riding, hop on your bike to discover Abel Tasman National Park, or take a 4-WD drive tour to Farewell Spit, the longest sand dune in New Zealand, and view a variety of sea birds and unique vegetation. And remember you are in one of New Zealand’s main wine producing area.

Day 12 Nelson – Punakaiki (335km). A gentle hilly ride takes us southwest through the Buller Gorge to the coast, past the Coaltown Museum in Westport and Tauranga Bay’s seal colonies. There’s an optional ride up Lewis Pass for lunch, worth a ride in both directions! You can also take time out for some white-water rafting and jet boating, and if all that’s not enough, we visit the famous Pancake Rocks and blowholes in Punakaiki.

Day 13 Punakaiki – Christchurch (300km). For us, the obvious route today is via the great Alpine route of Arthur’s Pass – certainly a case of saving the best to last! This is an area of high alpine peaks, steep valleys, rushing waterfalls, some unique wildlife, old pioneer settlements and some impressive civil engineering.

DAY 14 Depart Christchurch. We will arrange for your transfer back to the airport. Depending on your departure time, the day is free for you to explore Christchurch – how about the Antarctic Museum, the famous trolley buses, the Botanical Gardens or Hagley Park?
