Desert & Canoe Adventure Motorcycle Adventure Tour - Namibia & Etosha Pan

SA - Nam10to11Our Desert and Canoe tour takes you from the fertile winelands of the Western Cape in South Africa, past the picturesque Cederberg mountains, into the near desert conditions of the Orange River.

We have chosen July/August for the tour as the winter in southwest Africa, dry and cold at night, warm by day is perfect weather for motorcycling. Also the long grass has wilted giving a much better chance of game viewing. We ride BMW motorcycles,  and there is some riding on well-maintained gravel roads. This adventure tour will appeal to strong riders.

Tour highlights

  • Cape Town
  • Cederberg mountains
  • Canoeing on the Orange River
  • Augrabies Falls

Day 1 Arrive Cape Town. We meet you at the airport, transport you to our Cape Town accommodation and after you have had time to relax, bring you to our base and issue the motorbikes. During the afternoon we take you on a short ‘orientation’ tour of Cape Town to familiarise yourself with the motorbike and to see a little of this wonderful city. Dongola House.

Day 2 Cape Town – Clanwilliam (215 km). We set off for an easy ride through beautiful winelands and then open wheat growing farms to Clanwilliam, nestling under the Cederberg mountains. The large dam on the Olifants (elephants) River gives rise to the last real greenery we will see for ages and is a source of irrigation for vast citrus farms. Clanwilliam Lodge.

Day 3 Clanwilliam – Namaqualand (350 km). Today we leave the winter rainfall area of the Western Cape and enter the typical desert climate of cold nights and warm, dry days - just perfect for biking. As we progress north the landscape gets progressively more barren, distances between towns greater. This area is known as Namaqualand (after the indigenous people) and famous for the magnificent yellow and blue desert flowers which bloom after rains. Around Springbok are a number of copper mines, and if time allows we’ll visit one. O’Kiep Hotel

Day 4 Namaqualand – Noordoewer (320 km). Today we pass through some of the driest (and in summer hottest) parts of South Africa and Namibia. Hopefully formalities do not take too long as we cross the Orange River and enter Namibia. Being an ex-German colony things seem to work particularly efficiently in Namibia, even border crossings. Once through the border crossing it is only a few minutes ride west and we arrive at the comfortable river rafting base of Provenance Lodge .

Day 5 Today excitement of a different kind, we leave in 2 man canoes paddling down the river with guide and everything we need for our overnight stay on the banks of the Orange River, The Orange River is a globally important wetlands area and has an abundance of birdlife.  Look out for Fish Eagles swooping for their breakfast, and Vervet Monkeys playing in the trees. Today is a day to enjoy the freedom of the river and the magnificent scenery.

SA - Namibian 1Day 6 Noordoewer canoeing. We continue our canoe journey this morning before we meet our transport back to Provenance Lodge by road in time for dinner and overnight.

Day 7 Noordoewer- O’Kiep (140 km). A lazy morning at the lodge to swim , relax  or explore a little more of Namibia on your bike, and then an easy afternoon as we ride back into South Africa for our overnight stop at O’Kiep, there should be time for a tour of the copper mine ruins.O’Kiep Hotel

Day 8 O’Kiep - Augrabies (490 km). We will spend the day crossing the wide open spaces of the Northern Cape. There are few towns and villages here and only the sleepy town of Pofadder of any note. This area is home to zinc, copper and lead mining. Our overnight stop is in the Augrabies National Park, home to the magnificent Augrabies Falls

SA - Namibia FallsDay 9 Augrabies - Calvinia (460km). Today’s ride takes us south past huge vineyards clustered around the Orange River, past shallow salt pans. Just north of Upington on the Hakskennpan a British team will attempt to break the land speed record in 2015 lead by Richard Noble and with Wing Commander Green driving. Dorpshuis Country Lodge

Day 10 Calvinia - Cape Town (375 km). Our return to Cape Town today is via Tulbach and Bains Kloof pass and the Paarl Wine District. Dongola House

Day 11 Cape Town, A free day to do as you wish, visit Table Mountain by cable car for spectacular views, shop and explore the Waterfront or ride your bike to Cape Point. Return your bike late pm, It is now time to say goodbye to this beautiful country. We will transfer you to the airport for your return flight.
